Overview

This paper describes and advises on the process of non-food item distribution. As part of a humanitarian response Oxfam usually organises distribution of essential hygiene and other non-food items. While necessary in many situations devastated by disaster or in camps established far from towns, in some places where local markets are still functioning the use of cash or tokens may be more appropriate and more dignified allowing people to choose what they need and want. This will need to be coordinated with FS&L team. Some items such as underwear and sanitary material may be better distributed through ‘fairs’ organised specifically for women.
