Enabling Voices, Demanding Rights: A guide to gender-sensitive community engagement in large-scale land-based investment in agriculture
Overview
Agricultural investment can benefit local communities, but evidence suggests that the adverse impacts of large-scale land-based investments in Africa are disproportionately borne by women. Women often suffer from a lack of formal land rights and can be excluded from opportunities to participate and voice their interests in the management and proposed allocation of community land to investors.
This guide presents step-by-step information and advice for communities and other stakeholders to ensure that women and their communities are directly involved in decision making on the land issues that affect them. It was developed through community consultations in Kenya, Senegal, Cameroon and Zambia and was pilot-tested in Uganda. Also available to download is a technical guide for development practitioners and gender activists.
