Overview

Free trade benefits developed nations’ economies to the detriment of developing countries. Southern women’s organisations are uniting to challenge their negative experiences of the global economic system. They want access to policy-making institutions and communicative technologies, to bring about redistribution of wealth, equal access to resources, and their own empowerment. Yet the division is ‘winners/losers’ rather than North/South. People migrate and become cheap labour in the West, and women everywhere juggle family with productive and reproductive work. The article includes a feminist critique of economic and political policies that considers the vastly different roles of women and men.
