Youth in Shebeens & Taverns: An HIV and AIDS prevention opportunity
Overview
This case study reviews the HIV and AIDS Shebeens and Taverns Peer Campaign project in Lamontville. Kwa Zulu-Natal which set out to engage young people in learning about HIV and AIDS through the involvement of their regular social centre – the shebeens and taverns of the township.
The initiative is a project of the Lamontville HIV and AIDS Support Centre which aims to empower young people to deal with HIV and AIDS, STI prevention, and gender and socioeconomic development issue through community initiatives.
This document considers the development of the Shebeens and Taverns project from an initial base line survey to an evaluation of impact, and a critical review of the approaches used. The project was ground-breaking in that it set out to reach young people working through the engagement of Shebeen and Tavern owners in Lamontville.
This document is one of a number of publications highlighting learning during the second phase of JOHAP (April 2002-March 2005).
