Focusing on a Ghanaian development non-government organisation (NGO), this article outlines the different ways in which gender and/or a focus on women is incorporated into the work of a Southern NGO and explores the various interconnected factors that influence and shape this inclusion. The article highlights that while the organisation in question is indeed influenced by development trends and donor interests, its focus on women/gender is not solely (or even predominantly) the result of these factors alone. Indeed, this focus also stems from the organisation’s mandate and remit, and the demand and needs of its constituents.
