NGOs and gender policy
Overview
India’s State administration has implemented a gender policy for the country’s silk workers. But Mayoux’s research reveals that gender equality in the industry is far from being a reality. It is especially important to address gender issues in the silk reeling industry, because the industry is both expanding and profitable, offering its workers the potential to escape poverty and inequality. Women are taking steps to achieve this, and this article outlines measures that NGOs could take to support those women. The ultimate aim should be to give women control over resources and income, particularly in the non-domestic sphere.
